Vertical furrows in the forehead are given a place of honour in the cover illustrations of my books as a symptom number one. Wrinkling is nature's way of attempting to compensate for error of refraction and by means of wrinkling something is achieved, therefore there is some sense in it, unconscious though it may be.

By means of wrinkling, muscles over a wider area — accessory muscles of accommodation — are made to give additional  impulses to support the ciliary muscle  in its state of contraction. The vertical  furrows are caused by m.corrugator supercilii, supplied by facial  nerve, an excellent example of neurological synergism.
